Sin Delusion

In 2006, renowned biologist, Richard Dawkins wrote a book called The God Delusion. In this book he argues against the existence of God and creator. He basically says that those people who believe in those things are delusional. Now, certainly I do not give credence to Dawkins or his book but his book title made me think.

I do not believe Christians have a God delusion but I do think we are delusional sometimes.  Our delusion is about the impact, importance and power of SIN.  This delusion is not obvious at the outset. Believers in the Lord Jesus for the most part would agree that sin is a problem; however I see a church culture that allows sin to thrive at every turn.  The reason we struggle so much with sin is we have let the idea of “I am ok, you’re ok” mentality take over the communities of faith.

We don’t want to make anyone mad, so we don’t confront sin.

We don’t want to be “judgmental” so we don’t say anything when Christian people continue in sin.

We don’t want to “rock the boat,” so we give sermons and teachings that sound more like motivational talks and self help than the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

We don’t want to “be holier than thou” even though the very Bible we proclaim demands us to be holy as God is holy.

We are delusional when we think sin doesn’t matter.  Because sin destroys families, churches, individuals.  We need to come out of the sin delusion and begin to see more clearly the effect of living a lukewarm Christian life, where anything goes.  Christ’s death on the cross allows us to be clean before God and to live that way.  When we don’t call gossip, hatred, anger, adultery, fornication, addiction, and divisiveness……sin, we are ignoring what sent Jesus to the Cross.

We all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23

Because of our sin we need Jesus, to redeem us.  We need the Holy Spirit to convict us and we need other believers to help us.  It is my prayer that you and I and all who follow the Lord seek to live in purity and holiness and honor our Savior.
