Bible Study: Why? What? Where?

Bible studies come in many shapes and sizes.  There are Bible Studies for women, for men, for students. There are Bible studies that go through a book of the bible and there are ones that are topical.  There are classes that meet on Sunday morning and some that meet on Tuesday nights.  There are church specific Bible studies and community based studies.  So what one do I attend you may ask?  Should I attend more that one? What makes a Bible study worth my time?  These are good questions and ones that are on many peoples minds.  I want to share about the importance of Bible study and the important essentials of Bible Study.

Why Should I Go To Bible Study?

The Bible is a matter of life and death for us.  It is the word of God that allows us to see God for who he is, how he interacts with his people and what he desires from his people.  The Bible is a conduit of revelation from our Lord.  We see the creation of the world, the passion of Christ and the we read of the promised return of Jesus.  We understand salvation and sanctification all from the Bible.  With all this at stake, we embrace the Bible and the teachings from Scripture.  We embrace getting together to learn and grown and connect with the Lord and His Word.

We should attend Bible Study regularly to help us engage, understand and learn the Scripture.  Bible study offers a regular, reliable group to learn and grow with.  Individual studies are important, however not at the expense of regular interaction with other believers.

What Should I look for in a BIble Study?

There are a few standards that are not negotiable if a Bible study class is worthwhile.

1.  The teacher or institution has a high view of the Bible. Belief in inerrancy and authority of the Bible is foundational as a starting point for teaching Scripture.

2.  Look for a group that has strong consistent leadership.

3.  Find a group that is connected to a reputable institution or group.  i.e…, Precepts, Bible Study Fellowship, Church Sunday School/Small Group.

Where Should I attend Bible Study?

Hebrews10:25 reminds us that we should not forsake meeting together. I believe a baseline for all believers is to be connected to local church that values and teaches God’s word.  If your church offers Bible Study through the Sunday School or small groups, start there.  There is much to be said about worshipping with the same people you study the Word with. After that there are many groups/studies that can be helpful.

See You in Church!
