As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and on Spirit-just as you were called to one hope when you were called- one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. Ephesians 4:1-6
Paul challenged the believers at Ephesus and challenges us to live up to the calling of Christ. A question remains does our behavior match up? We often live our lives in a way that is about living up to our standards and not his. It is disrespectful to the Lord to live in a way that is not worthy of him. We often serve God on our terms. We must be careful here. If we live our lives on our terms we will be very likely to fail.
God has expectations of his people. Are you living up to those? Are you a person of the Spirit? Are you humble, gentle and patient? Are you living a holy life? For us as believers to continually justify our behavior is a dangerous game that we must repent of immediately.
I doubt anyone wants to disrespect the Lord, but our actions, our apathy and our attitudes often do.
God is a god of grace, mercy and holiness. He loves us but expects us to live worthy of his sacrifice. May we return to that truth today!
I appreciate your words, pastor. Personal holiness is something we are good at on Sunday morning when everyone sees, but what about the rest of the time. We are called to be holy because He is holy & as followers of Christ, we are to reflect His holiness.
Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” (1 Peter 1:13-16 NIV)
In my world of working 40 to 60+ hours a week, playing softball, taking the kid’s to their sports events, watching tv, playing on the computer, etc, etc…. I didn’t have time to live out my calling. I busied myself with worldly things and had almost forgotten what God’s voice sounded like. My life was filled with so much noise that when God spoke and expected me to listen, to follow, to obey, I couldn’t hear, or I was to distracted, or I just did not expect Him to speak to me during my “normal” day. I made a huge change in my life 7 years ago and found solid footing in that change 4 years ago. I decided that everyday, I would find God and join Him in His work. It may be at my kid’s school, the grocery store, the gas station, driving home, at home, at my families homes, it doesn’t matter to me, just as long as God is working and He asks me to join in. I thought four years ago, that there would be no way that I could find God everyday, but once I opened myself to Him and allowed Him to make real that passage and many more, I can’t seem to not find Him anymore!!! My life has changed, since that decision, since that commitment, since that understanding and I have never regretted it, not once!!! It has also, changed my family and my friends and for that I will be eternally grateful to God!!! It’s hard, it’s inconvenient, it interrupts, it interferes, but most of all, it allows me to be transformed by the renewing of my mind, so that I am able to test and approve what God’s will is!!! Thanks for the reminder Darrell, it’s awesome to see God working so wonderfully in your life!!!
